VP-31 Black Lightnings / Genies Reverse Print Sticker - Design Overview

This sticker design celebrates VP-31, the U.S. Navy's "Black Lightnings" (formerly "Genies"), a Fleet Replacement Squadron specializing in maritime patrol aircraft training. The reverse print allows for application to the inside of a window or other transparent surface, allowing the design to be viewed from the outside.

Visual Elements & Representation

The design prominently features imagery associated with the Black Lightnings and their mission. The stylized representation typically includes elements such as a lightning bolt, a symbol of speed and strike capability, reflecting the squadron's name and its ability to rapidly deploy. Often, the design will integrate a silhouette of a patrol aircraft such as the P-3 Orion or P-8A Poseidon, representing the aircraft the squadron operates and trains its personnel on.

The use of a black and often yellow or gold color scheme would be used to highlight the "Black Lightnings" nickname and squadron identity. The inclusion of the squadron's official designation, "VP-31," solidifies its specific representation. Finally, the "Genies" nickname could be incorporated by using a Genie lamp with smoke coming out of it that is colored black to show the power of the Genie.

Meaning & Symbolism

The overall design symbolizes the squadron's role in preparing naval aviators and aircrew for maritime patrol operations. The lightning bolt and aircraft silhouettes signify the squadron’s training in anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, reconnaissance, and general maritime patrol capabilities. These elements together stand for the operational readiness and lethality of the Navy's maritime patrol community, ensuring they are always ready to meet the challenges of the seas.

Reverse-print die-cut decals are made to be installed on the **inside** of glass so your artwork faces outward. Built from water-resistant vinyl and finished with a matte UV laminate, they’re designed to stay vivid while being protected from the elements.

Think of these as “inside-protected” window graphics: the printed face is applied to the glass interior, which keeps the design shielded from direct contact and weather. The core material is a robust, water-resistant vinyl topped with a matte laminate that reduces glare and adds scratch resistance.

We use eco-solvent inks for saturated, long-lasting color, and each decal is precision die-cut so the edges sit clean against the glass. Finished in the USA from globally sourced components, these decals balance durability with a professional, understated look.

  • Material: water-resistant vinyl with a matte UV-protective laminate.
  • Method: reverse-print (installed inside glass) so the environment meets glass, not the ink.
  • Durability: engineered for multi-year outdoor performance when properly applied.
  • Made in the USA: assembled locally from globally sourced parts.
  • Design notes: very small elements placed close together may cut into a single shape; low-contrast elements on dark glass can be hard to see from the street.

Where do people put these? Storefront windows, car or van glass (interior mount), glass office partitions, and interior display cases are common spots. Because the print faces outward but is protected from the outside, the graphic holds up better against touch and weather.

  1. Prep: thoroughly clean the glass—use mild soap and water or an alcohol wipe for grease. Let it dry completely.
  2. Position: peel a corner of the liner and align carefully. Lay the decal down slowly, pressing from the center outward to push out air.
  3. Finish: use a soft card or squeegee to smooth edges; allow at least 24 hours for the adhesive to fully bond before heavy exposure to weather.

Heads-up: if your design uses fine text or very thin lines packed close together, consider simplifying those elements—small slivers can merge during cutting. Also, designs placed on dark-tinted glass will read darker and may lose subtle hues.

Care is low-key but worthwhile. Wipe decals with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For more stubborn dirt, use a lightly damp microfiber and blot dry right away.

Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, and harsh solvents such as straight ammonia or concentrated cleaners—those can dull the laminate or lift edges. Proper, gentle cleaning preserves the matte finish and color saturation over time.

Available in five sizes. We list sizes by the sticker’s longest side—so a 4″ decal measures four inches across its greatest dimension. The die-cut follows the artwork outline for a tight, professional edge.

If your artwork has intricate islands or very thin gaps, expect slight variation: tiny islands may be merged into a single piece during cutting. When in doubt, test at a slightly larger scale or simplify closely spaced details.
