This sixteenth-century Korean hanging scroll shows a waterfall pouring over rocks, misty peaks rising behind it, and a small group of seated officials gathered beneath a tree.

Visual Elements & Composition

The scroll is a tall vertical rectangle, and the eye travels down it the way the water does. Ochre silk forms the ground, with grey ink carrying the mountains and cascade in soft washes of light colour. Dark green accents the trees and foliage, and a pale brocade border frames the whole image. A vermilion seal red marks the surface as a formal document. The figures are small and quiet, so the landscape dominates and the people sit within it rather than in front of it.

Meaning & Symbolism

This is a gyehoedo, a commemorative gathering painting from Korea's Joseon dynasty. Such scrolls typically record officials from one government bureau, or scholars who passed the civil service examinations in the same year, meeting to mark their professional and social bonds. The genre reflects Neo-Confucian values of camaraderie, loyalty, and the prestige of state service, and it served as a visual record of elite participation in state affairs. Scrolls like this often listed participants' names, titles, and birth years, preserving their shared status for families and later generations. Created around 1551, the work is now held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and its artist is unidentified.
