This late 17th-century Chinese painting sets rows of robed figures with animal heads against a deep blue field, and it is one of a series depicting fourteen constellations.

Visual Elements & Composition

The image is built as a vertical rectangle organised into tiered rows. Deep blue dominates the ground, while off-white robes, vermilion red and ochre yellow mark out the figures. The ox-headed, dog-headed, horse-headed and bird-headed figures repeat in orderly succession, and a blue-faced, lion-like mask gives the composition its sharpest focal point.
