Transport Éire character set (Ireland) - Die-Cut Stickers

This design renders the Transport Éire character set, the oblique typeface that carries Irish-language text on road signs across Ireland.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition is built entirely from letterforms. A heavy, slanted sans-serif alphabet fills the frame, with its strokes leaning forward at a steady angle so every glyph reads as one unified block of motion. The focus falls on the custom-drawn characters that set this set apart from ordinary road lettering: the distinctive shapes of the A, M, N and lowercase i, and the vowels carrying the acute accent known as the fada. Each mark is given equal weight, which lets the eye move from glyph to glyph the way a driver reads a sign at speed.

Meaning & Symbolism

The typeface descends from Transport Heavy, designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert, the duo behind the modern British road-sign system. The Irish variant adapts that foundation to the needs of the Irish language, adding bespoke forms and the fada so that place names and directions are spelled correctly. The alphabet is governed by the Traffic Signs Manual (TSM), Chapter 2, which sets the standards that keep national signage clear and consistent. In that sense the lettering stands for official, standardised communication and for the language itself appearing in public space.

Crafted for the Sticker's Outline

A die-cut sticker is cut to the exact shape of its artwork, so the outline of each letter becomes the outline of the object. Here the characters define the edge, leaving no surrounding border to dilute the forms. This suits a design made of letters: the sticker reads as a piece of signage in miniature, meant for a laptop lid, a notebook or a car's rear window where the typeface can be seen up close and read on its own terms.

Die-cut vinyl decals: precision-cut shapes on premium water-resistant vinyl with a matte laminate and UV protection — built to resist sun, rain and everyday wear for long-lasting use.

These die-cut decals are trimmed exactly to the design, producing crisp edges and a professional finish. They’re made from thick, water-resistant vinyl and finished with a matte UV laminate that reduces glare while protecting colors from fading.

The production process uses eco-solvent inks for dense, even color and a protective overlaminate that helps the decal survive outdoor exposure. Rated for multi-year outdoor life when applied to the right surface, these decals give a clean, matte look without sacrificing durability.

  • Material: premium water-resistant vinyl engineered for weather resistance.
  • Finish: matte laminate that mutes shine and guards against scratches.
  • Print: eco-solvent inks for solid blacks and vivid color depth.
  • Protection: UV laminate extends outdoor life and helps prevent fade.
  • Longevity: rated to last multiple years outdoors under normal conditions.

Die-cut decals adhere best to smooth, non-porous surfaces — glass, metal, coated plastics and finished wood. They work well on bottles, windows, laptops and vehicle windows for short- to medium-term outdoor use.

  1. Prep the surface: remove dust and oils with a lint-free cloth; for residue use mild soap and water and allow to dry fully.
  2. Peel and position: lift a corner of the liner, align the decal and lay it down slowly, pressing from the center outward.
  3. Seal: smooth the edges with a card or your thumb to ensure full contact and reduce trapping air.

Note: to keep adhesive performance in wet conditions, apply decals to very smooth surfaces (for example: glass). Avoid rough or heavily textured materials where the adhesive can’t form a full bond.

Maintenance is low-effort. Gently wipe decals with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp microfiber and light pressure will clean the surface — dry immediately afterward.

Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents or power washers; these can scratch the laminate or lift edges. Proper care preserves the matte finish and keeps colors vivid for longer.

Sizes are specified by the longest side. For example, a 4″ decal measures four inches across its greatest dimension. The die-cut follows the artwork’s contour so the decal sits flush with clean, professional edges.

Small variations can occur with intricate outlines, but the listed measurement always reflects the maximum edge-to-edge length for accurate placement planning.
