This design reproduces a Yuan dynasty hanging scroll by Tang Di, a landscape built from ink, silk and red seals in the manner of the Tang poet-painter Wang Wei.

Visual Elements & Composition

The scroll is set on olive silk framed by a cream mount, and its vertical format gives the composition a tall, quiet axis. Charcoal ink dominates the picture, rendered as soft washes that build an ink-washed rock ridge rising through the middle ground. Vermilion seals sit in the margins as rectangular accents, their red the only strong colour against the muted field. Nothing is crowded; the empty silk does as much work as the painted forms.

Meaning & Symbolism

The work follows the literati idea of "poetry as painting and painting as poetry," using Wang Wei's verse as its starting point to capture the inner reality of nature rather than a literal view of it. The ridge and open space express the relationship between man and nature that defined the scholar-official class. Tang Di, a significant Yuan figure, drew on the Northern Song masters and revived their landscape language for the fourteenth century, and the seals record the hands that owned and valued the scroll.
