Sergeant B. F. Smith Of Company B, 52nd Virginia Infantry Regiment, And Company F, 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

This sticker reproduces a hand-tinted tintype portrait of a bearded seated man in buttoned jacket and bow tie, set in an ornate gold diamond-pattern case frame.

Visual Elements & Composition

Antique gold dominates the case frame, which carries a diamond lattice pattern around a rounded portrait opening. Dusty brown, pale grey, slate green and near black make up the portrait's palette, and the tinting gives the image a soft, aged colour. A draped table or pedestal supports the seated figure, and the composition is centred and formal, with the sitter placed directly within the frame.

Meaning & Symbolism

The portrait commemorates Sergeant B. F. Smith, who served the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. His records place him in two Virginia units: Company B of the 52nd Virginia Infantry Regiment and Company F of the 1st Virginia Cavalry Regiment. Moving from foot infantry to mounted cavalry reflects how soldiers were reassigned as the war's needs changed, and the 1860s tintype is a direct record of that period.

In a Case, Seen Up Close

A tintype was made to be held and looked at closely, and the image sits within a case that opens like a small book. The gold frame draws the eye to the sitter, and the sticker's cut edge keeps the ornate outline of the case as one clean shape on the surface it is placed on.

Die-cut vinyl decals: precision-cut shapes on premium water-resistant vinyl with a matte laminate and UV protection — built to resist sun, rain and everyday wear for long-lasting use.

These die-cut decals are trimmed exactly to the design, producing crisp edges and a professional finish. They’re made from thick, water-resistant vinyl and finished with a matte UV laminate that reduces glare while protecting colors from fading.

The production process uses eco-solvent inks for dense, even color and a protective overlaminate that helps the decal survive outdoor exposure. Rated for multi-year outdoor life when applied to the right surface, these decals give a clean, matte look without sacrificing durability.

  • Material: premium water-resistant vinyl engineered for weather resistance.
  • Finish: matte laminate that mutes shine and guards against scratches.
  • Print: eco-solvent inks for solid blacks and vivid color depth.
  • Protection: UV laminate extends outdoor life and helps prevent fade.
  • Longevity: rated to last multiple years outdoors under normal conditions.

Die-cut decals adhere best to smooth, non-porous surfaces — glass, metal, coated plastics and finished wood. They work well on bottles, windows, laptops and vehicle windows for short- to medium-term outdoor use.

  1. Prep the surface: remove dust and oils with a lint-free cloth; for residue use mild soap and water and allow to dry fully.
  2. Peel and position: lift a corner of the liner, align the decal and lay it down slowly, pressing from the center outward.
  3. Seal: smooth the edges with a card or your thumb to ensure full contact and reduce trapping air.

Note: to keep adhesive performance in wet conditions, apply decals to very smooth surfaces (for example: glass). Avoid rough or heavily textured materials where the adhesive can’t form a full bond.

Maintenance is low-effort. Gently wipe decals with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp microfiber and light pressure will clean the surface — dry immediately afterward.

Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents or power washers; these can scratch the laminate or lift edges. Proper care preserves the matte finish and keeps colors vivid for longer.

Sizes are specified by the longest side. For example, a 4″ decal measures four inches across its greatest dimension. The die-cut follows the artwork’s contour so the decal sits flush with clean, professional edges.

Small variations can occur with intricate outlines, but the listed measurement always reflects the maximum edge-to-edge length for accurate placement planning.
