This Edo-period painting by Kano Tansui Moritsune is an ink and colour study on silk, set as a vertical hanging scroll and drawn from a triptych of hanging scrolls.

Visual Elements & Composition

Grey ink and muted taupe build a mountain landscape around a waterfall, with pine trees rooted on the cliffs and tiny figures placed among the rock. Green and gold accents catch the light against the cream silk, and a cream brocade border frames the whole image. The inscription reads 行年六十七歳, "aged sixty-seven," and the signature 法橋探水齋筆 identifies the painter as Tansui, the brush behind the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

Mount Penglai is the island sanctuary of the immortals in Taoist cosmology, and it is paired here with the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang rivers, a landscape tradition drawn from Chinese poetry. Together they turn scenery into a moral and spiritual landscape, a meditation on the secluded life scholars and poets long pursued. Tansui belonged to the Kano school, which served the Japanese shogunate for centuries, and this scroll shows that school in its late period, keeping classical motifs alive with the skill of a hereditary professional.
