Visual Elements & Composition

The artwork is a vertical panel built around a cluster of figures. Five court ladies gather in a lattice-screened garden pavilion, two of them seated at a low table while a standing attendant holds a fan. A flowering blossom tree and rock formations frame the scene on either side. Vermilion red and jade green carry the figures and garments, pale ivory and slate blue-grey organise the architecture, and gold leaf fills the ground behind everything, so the gold reads as the setting itself rather than a backdrop.

The scene belongs to kanga, the Chinese-inspired taste that held great influence over Japanese art in the sixteenth century.
