Flag of the Governor of Fiji 1877-1883 (Fiji) STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal
This sticker reproduces the governor's standard used in the Colony of Fiji between 1877 and 1883, a Union Jack field carrying one of the most elaborate colonial badges of its era.
Visual Elements & Composition
Navy blue fills the largest share of the design, with white and red in roughly equal measure and small touches of green and light blue. The Union Jack structure anchors the fly, and the central badge sits on top of it as a ringed composition. A circular surround of foliage encloses crossed war-clubs, and a shield at the heart of the badge carries a seated figure. Oak and laurel branches and crossed tools add layered, ornamental detail, so the piece reads as dense and Victorian rather than minimal.
Meaning & Symbolism
Britain annexed the Fijian islands on 10 October 1874, and this standard marked the start of colonial governance. The crossed war-clubs, known as i ula, draw on Fijian material culture, while the mermaid on the shield connects the badge to Pacific mythology. The governor found the design too complex, and in 1883 the Admiralty approved a simplified white-disc badge with the word FIJI beneath the Royal Arms crest. That short run makes this version a distinctive record of an early phase of the colony's heraldry.
Life on a Kiss-Cut Sticker
A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of the artwork, so the badge, the foliage ring and the Union Jack field come off the backing as a single shape. The detail shows best on a smooth, flat surface such as a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window, where the wreath and the clubs can be seen up close. Each sticker carries the badge as one unbroken image, with the intricate shield kept intact at the centre.
