Cowan's Independent Battery, 1st N.Y., Inside One Of The Rebel Forts In Front Of Petersburg, 24th June 1864 (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A sepia albumen photograph of a Union encampment in the field, with supply wagons, harnessed animals and tents, taken during the siege of Petersburg in June 1864.

Visual Elements & Composition

The image is a warm sepia print in pale cream and sepia tan, with dark brown reserved for the deepest shadows under the wagons. Army supply wagons with canvas tops stand across the open ground, with mules or horses harnessed to them. Canvas tents rise in the middle distance, and small groups of soldiers are scattered far back in the field. The edges fall away into an irregular vignette, which pulls the eye toward the centre of the scene.

Meaning & Symbolism

The title places the scene at Petersburg on 24 June 1864, during the Civil War, and names Cowan's Independent Battery of the 1st New York. The wagons, tents and animals describe the working life of an army in the field, with the supply and transport that kept a unit in action. The photograph is a documentary record rather than an artistic composition, and its value lies in the clear view it gives of camp life and the logistics behind the fighting at Petersburg.

Cut to the Vignette Outline

A die-cut sticker follows the outline of its design, so the soft, irregular edges of the vignette can set the shape of the piece. The wagons and the open field give the image a clear horizontal shape that reads well at a glance, and the warm tones suit a flat surface such as a laptop, a journal or a notebook cover.

Die-cut vinyl decals: precision-cut shapes on premium water-resistant vinyl with a matte laminate and UV protection — built to resist sun, rain and everyday wear for long-lasting use.

These die-cut decals are trimmed exactly to the design, producing crisp edges and a professional finish. They’re made from thick, water-resistant vinyl and finished with a matte UV laminate that reduces glare while protecting colors from fading.

The production process uses eco-solvent inks for dense, even color and a protective overlaminate that helps the decal survive outdoor exposure. Rated for multi-year outdoor life when applied to the right surface, these decals give a clean, matte look without sacrificing durability.

  • Material: premium water-resistant vinyl engineered for weather resistance.
  • Finish: matte laminate that mutes shine and guards against scratches.
  • Print: eco-solvent inks for solid blacks and vivid color depth.
  • Protection: UV laminate extends outdoor life and helps prevent fade.
  • Longevity: rated to last multiple years outdoors under normal conditions.

Die-cut decals adhere best to smooth, non-porous surfaces — glass, metal, coated plastics and finished wood. They work well on bottles, windows, laptops and vehicle windows for short- to medium-term outdoor use.

  1. Prep the surface: remove dust and oils with a lint-free cloth; for residue use mild soap and water and allow to dry fully.
  2. Peel and position: lift a corner of the liner, align the decal and lay it down slowly, pressing from the center outward.
  3. Seal: smooth the edges with a card or your thumb to ensure full contact and reduce trapping air.

Note: to keep adhesive performance in wet conditions, apply decals to very smooth surfaces (for example: glass). Avoid rough or heavily textured materials where the adhesive can’t form a full bond.

Maintenance is low-effort. Gently wipe decals with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp microfiber and light pressure will clean the surface — dry immediately afterward.

Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents or power washers; these can scratch the laminate or lift edges. Proper care preserves the matte finish and keeps colors vivid for longer.

Sizes are specified by the longest side. For example, a 4″ decal measures four inches across its greatest dimension. The die-cut follows the artwork’s contour so the decal sits flush with clean, professional edges.

Small variations can occur with intricate outlines, but the listed measurement always reflects the maximum edge-to-edge length for accurate placement planning.
