A Dead Rebel Soldier, As He Lay In The Trenches Of Fort Mahone, Called By The Soldiers, Fort Damnation ... (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A sepia stereoview shows a Union soldier standing beside a sandbag-covered earthen bomb-proof at Fort Sedgwick, the position the soldiers nicknamed Fort Hell.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built from twin side-by-side photographs on a stereoview card, framed in a yellow border and printed in warm sepia tones. The soldier stands at the edge of the frame, and the bunker dominates the scene: a low mound of earth and sandbags with a timber door, backed by stacked wicker gabions. Pale sky and muted ground hold the palette together, and the printed caption on the card gives the scene its title.

Meaning & Symbolism

Fort Sedgwick was a Union fortification near Petersburg, Virginia, during the Siege of Petersburg from 1864 to 1865. Its bomb-proofs were built of earth and heavy timber to shield troops from artillery and mortar fire, and the nickname Fort Hell records how relentless that bombardment was. The photograph captures the engineering of trench warfare and the subterranean life of the soldiers who lived beneath the shelling.

On the Die-Cut Sticker

A die-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the edge of the stereoview becomes the shape of the piece. Its matte surface suits a sketchbook, a journal or a notebook cover, where the stark, weathered scene can be studied up close, as one would hold an original card.

Die-cut vinyl decals: precision-cut shapes on premium water-resistant vinyl with a matte laminate and UV protection — built to resist sun, rain and everyday wear for long-lasting use.

These die-cut decals are trimmed exactly to the design, producing crisp edges and a professional finish. They’re made from thick, water-resistant vinyl and finished with a matte UV laminate that reduces glare while protecting colors from fading.

The production process uses eco-solvent inks for dense, even color and a protective overlaminate that helps the decal survive outdoor exposure. Rated for multi-year outdoor life when applied to the right surface, these decals give a clean, matte look without sacrificing durability.

  • Material: premium water-resistant vinyl engineered for weather resistance.
  • Finish: matte laminate that mutes shine and guards against scratches.
  • Print: eco-solvent inks for solid blacks and vivid color depth.
  • Protection: UV laminate extends outdoor life and helps prevent fade.
  • Longevity: rated to last multiple years outdoors under normal conditions.

Die-cut decals adhere best to smooth, non-porous surfaces — glass, metal, coated plastics and finished wood. They work well on bottles, windows, laptops and vehicle windows for short- to medium-term outdoor use.

  1. Prep the surface: remove dust and oils with a lint-free cloth; for residue use mild soap and water and allow to dry fully.
  2. Peel and position: lift a corner of the liner, align the decal and lay it down slowly, pressing from the center outward.
  3. Seal: smooth the edges with a card or your thumb to ensure full contact and reduce trapping air.

Note: to keep adhesive performance in wet conditions, apply decals to very smooth surfaces (for example: glass). Avoid rough or heavily textured materials where the adhesive can’t form a full bond.

Maintenance is low-effort. Gently wipe decals with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For stubborn marks, a slightly damp microfiber and light pressure will clean the surface — dry immediately afterward.

Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents or power washers; these can scratch the laminate or lift edges. Proper care preserves the matte finish and keeps colors vivid for longer.

Sizes are specified by the longest side. For example, a 4″ decal measures four inches across its greatest dimension. The die-cut follows the artwork’s contour so the decal sits flush with clean, professional edges.

Small variations can occur with intricate outlines, but the listed measurement always reflects the maximum edge-to-edge length for accurate placement planning.
