The design honours the 93rd Engineer Battalion of the United States Army, a segregated unit of Black enlisted personnel that helped construct the Alaska-Canada Highway during World War II and later supported the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam, building Dong Tam Base Camp and Long Thanh North Airfield. The wrench, pipe and truss bridge speak to that technical work.
