Visual Elements & Composition

Gold takes up the largest share of the artwork, with crimson as the second colour and sky blue as an accent. The layout is built around a shield, with an inverted triangle and a scroll banner anchoring the lower portion. A parachute and a field cannon form the central figures, and an eight-pointed sun with radiating sunburst rays sits behind them. The scroll carries the words THUNDER, FROM and ABOVE, which set the tone of the whole piece. The rendering is flat vector, with clean edges and no shading to break up the colour fields.

Meaning & Symbolism

The parachute marks the airborne identity of the unit, and the field cannon marks its artillery role. Together they show a battalion that delivered firepower after arriving by air. The sunburst and eight-pointed sun carry the traditional heraldic language of rank and honour, while the motto on the scroll names the unit's method of striking from above. The 674th Airborne Field Artillery Battalion of the United States Army was active from 1942 to 1957, and was previously designated as both the 674th Glider Field Artillery Battalion and the 674th Parachute Field Artillery Battalion. It served in the Pacific Theater of World War II and in the Korean War. This design is a commemorative tribute to those soldiers and to the unit's place in mid-century airborne history.
