Crimson red and deep violet dominate, set against cream white, emerald green and ochre gold. Court attendants in red and purple robes frame a robed figure seated in a throne-like chair. Officers in Western-style military dress are seated among them, and one officer kneels to present a lacquer box, so the eye moves from the kneeling figure toward the throne.

Meaning & Symbolism

The gift cup is the centre of the scene. In Meiji ceremony, the Emperor's bestowal of a cup marked the honour a military leader received from the throne. The arrangement of figures expresses hierarchy, with the throne at the heart of the ritual and the commanders receiving favour in measured order. Chikanobu recorded the ritual customs of his period, and the September 1877 date places the scene in the early decades of the modern Japanese state. The title, Kunkō no shō, names the ceremony itself.

Where the Triptych Lives on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the contours of the three panels and the cartouche become the shape you apply. Smooth flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows give a composition this dense room to be seen up close, and the detail of the court robes and military dress reads best at that distance. Collectors of Meiji prints will recognise the layered red and violet palette immediately.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/ysh-hashimoto-chikanobu-illustration-of-the-honored-commanders-receiving-the-emperors-gift-cup-kunk-no-sh-september-1877-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-YSHHSH-2X2-36-alt-3.webp?v=1785622642
https://thestickerspace.com/products/ysh-hashimoto-chikanobu-illustration-of-the-honored-commanders-receiving-the-emperors-gift-cup-kunk-no-sh-september-1877-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
