The figure is seen from behind, kneeling in a patterned robe, so the viewer shares his attention on the work. A scroll lies across the writing table beside the brush and its stand, and the composition is held within a vertical rectangle, with geometric framing that gives the image its quiet order. Characters appear within the print, including 筆, the word for brush, and 文房四友, the "four friends of the study."

Meaning & Symbolism

Ono no Tōfū (894–966) is one of Japan's most celebrated calligraphers, and his reputation rests on the discipline of the brush as both craft and scholarship. Gakutei's print places him within a 19th-century view of Heian-era courtly culture, drawing on the late Edo tradition of ukiyo-e woodblock printing. The "four friends of the study" refer to the brush, ink, paper and inkstone, the tools that define the scholar's practice. Together they make the print a tribute to written art and to the cultural heritage of the Japanese court.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The brush and the vertical panel are the forms at the heart of this design, and a kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the cut can trace the brush, the scroll or the panel edge itself. Placed on a laptop, journal or notebook, the composition reads as a small, deliberate piece of scholarly history, close to the hand and viewed up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/yashima-gakutei-the-heian-court-calligrapher-ono-no-tf-894966-calligraphy-brush-fude-from-four-ca-1827-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-YSHGKT-2X2-124-alt-3.webp?v=1785623878
https://thestickerspace.com/products/yashima-gakutei-the-heian-court-calligrapher-ono-no-tf-894966-calligraphy-brush-fude-from-four-ca-1827-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
