Beside him sits a brush holder filled with brushes on a red lattice table, and an inkstone rests nearby. Stylised blue hills and a river fill the background, giving the scene a quiet horizon. The palette is restrained: slate blue, pale cream, vermilion, sage green and black. Characters are set into the composition, including 伯英, Boying's given name, 硯 for the inkstone, and 文房四友, the four friends of the scholar's study.

Meaning & Symbolism

Boying was celebrated as a master of cursive script, which earned him the title "Sage of Cursive." The objects around him are the four treasures of the study: brush, ink, paper and inkstone. Together they signal calligraphy as a scholarly discipline, a practice of discipline and cultivated taste rather than mere decoration. Gakutei, a major Edo-period artist, drew on Chinese subject matter to present that intellectual tradition to Japanese viewers, and the work carries the contemplative mood of a respectful portrait of a figure admired across generations.

Built to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows whatever shape the design calls for, so this artwork can be cut to the scholar's robe, the edge of the scroll, or the square panel of the original composition. Each cut leaves the image intact against its backing, which makes the piece as much a collector's object as a decoration. Placed on a notebook, a case or a desk, it brings a fragment of Edo-period calligraphy into everyday objects.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/yashima-gakutei-the-chinese-calligrapher-boying-japanese-hakuei-also-known-as-the-sage-of-cursive-ca-1827-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-YSHGKT-2X2-118-alt-3.webp?v=1785623964
https://thestickerspace.com/products/yashima-gakutei-the-chinese-calligrapher-boying-japanese-hakuei-also-known-as-the-sage-of-cursive-ca-1827-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
