A seated woman in a slate grey robe reads an unrolled scroll at the centre, while stacked scrolls, a candlestick and a single sheet of writing paper fill the space around her. A large vat with a ladle stands within the frame. The palette is traditional: vermilion red, sage green, pale blue and cream, with fan and roundel motifs repeated through the design. The text includes 文房四友, the Four Friends of the Study, and 紙, meaning paper.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Four Friends of the Study are the brush, ink, paper and inkstone, the implements of scholarship, so the characters frame the picture as a record of literate work. Nuji's role in gathering the writings of the Daoist sages places the scene in the preservation of ancient wisdom, a theme central to the period's archival culture. The vat and ladle connect the scene to the making of paper that the title names. Gakutei, working around 1827, turned a female attendant into the quiet centre of a scholar's world, a detail that gives the piece its contemplative mood.

Shaped to the Sticker's Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the framed panel, the scroll-reader and the vat become a single shape rather than a rectangle on a backing sheet. It suits the smooth, flat surfaces the manufacturer specifies, such as journals, laptops and windows, where the cut edge lets the image sit like a page element. For collectors of Edo-period prints, the sticker carries Gakutei's composition onto everyday objects.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/yashima-gakutei-nuji-japanese-joki-female-attendant-who-compiled-writings-by-daoist-sages-paper-ca-1827-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-YSHGKT-2X2-86-alt-3.webp?v=1785624437
https://thestickerspace.com/products/yashima-gakutei-nuji-japanese-joki-female-attendant-who-compiled-writings-by-daoist-sages-paper-ca-1827-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
