Paper cream and olive grey set the ground, while crimson, khaki and charcoal carry the warrior's presence and the edges of the scene. An andon paper lantern stand sits among the panels, its lines softening the hard geometry. The warrior is partly hidden, so the eye moves between his face, the screen and the lantern before settling on him.

Meaning & Symbolism

Hino Kumawakamaru is a figure from the Taiheiki, the Japanese epic of civil war that shaped how later generations pictured samurai loyalty and courage. The key-fret pattern is a traditional Japanese motif, and here it frames a hero at a moment of watchful readiness. Gakutei works in the late Edo period style of ukiyo-e, using classical linework and traditional pigments to present the warrior class as legend. The print stands for Bushido, Japanese mythology and the heroic storytelling that carried the Taiheiki into popular imagery.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the samurai's silhouette and the frame's edges become the shape of the object itself. Placed on a surface, the design reads as a single figure rather than a rectangle, with the screen and lantern working as a backdrop around him. Its small scale suits a close look, the kind of detail a collector notices when the sticker is up at eye level.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/yashima-gakutei-hino-kumawakamaru-warrior-from-the-book-taiheiki-ca-1840-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-YSHGKT-2X2-60-alt-3.webp?v=1785624812
https://thestickerspace.com/products/yashima-gakutei-hino-kumawakamaru-warrior-from-the-book-taiheiki-ca-1840-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
