Smith Of Company G And Company K, 4th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment In Uniform And Tricorn Hat (U.S. Civil War) STICKER Vinyl Die-Cut Decal

A Civil War-era tintype of William W. Smith, a soldier of Companies G and K of the 4th Massachusetts Infantry, shown in uniform within an embossed gilt case.

Visual Elements & Composition

Sepia grey and antique gold dominate the image, with charcoal in the soldier's dark clothing and a touch of dusty rose warming the tones. The portrait sits in an oval vignette, framed by a rectangular gilt case. Its border is embossed with an eagle, flags, drums, cannons and crossed sabres, and the bearded soldier in a grey coat looks out from the centre with a formal, steady gaze.

Meaning & Symbolism

The case ornaments speak to the army and the nation: the eagle and flags stand for the Union, while the drums, cannons and sabres mark the military life that the men of the regiment lived. Tintype portraits of this kind were made for soldiers to carry home, so the image connects a single named man with the regiment he served in during the American Civil War. The design honours documented service, and the formal pose reflects the seriousness that portraits of the period were meant to carry.

Set on a Die-Cut Edge

A die-cut sticker follows the outline of its artwork, so the oval portrait and its gilt frame shape the sticker's own silhouette. That suits a tintype whose subject is set inside a frame: the cut edge carries the portrait's ornate border out to the surface it is placed on.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/william-w-smith-of-company-g-and-company-k-4th-massachusetts-infantry-regiment-in-uniform-and-tricorn-hat-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-26566929965490997611-front.webp?v=1790451351
https://thestickerspace.com/products/william-w-smith-of-company-g-and-company-k-4th-massachusetts-infantry-regiment-in-uniform-and-tricorn-hat-us-civil-war-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal
