The robe is the strongest colour in the piece, set against an off-white ground that keeps the composition open and quiet. Black ink defines the figure's outline and the calligraphic inscription that runs down the scroll, while vermilion seal stamps punctuate the surface in small, sharp red marks.

Meaning & Symbolism

Portraits of literati such as Zhao Zhiqian celebrated scholarship, refinement and mastery of the brush, and they were valued as records of intellectual lineage as much as likeness. The inscription and the red seals work as signatures of authorship and endorsement, the conventions by which a painting joined the circle of its subject's admirers. Dated 1871, the work comes from a period of major social and cultural change in China, and it reflects the portraiture traditions of the era that shaped nineteenth-century Chinese painting.

Cut to the Scroll

A kiss-cut sticker follows the outline of its design, so this sticker takes the shape of the hanging scroll itself, with the pale blue robe, the inscription and the vermilion seals carried to the edge of the vinyl. It suits smooth flat surfaces such as journals, laptops and windows, where the figure can be seen up close, the way a scroll is read by hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/wang-yuan-portrait-of-zhao-zhiqian-dated-1871-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788216513
https://thestickerspace.com/products/wang-yuan-portrait-of-zhao-zhiqian-dated-1871-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
