Pale paper sets the field, and the image is built from ink-grey fine line drawing with no colour beyond it. A seated figure in armour gestures mid-scene, a standing official in a winged hat holds the eye at the centre, and a figure peeks out from behind a tree, a small touch of drama tucked into the foliage. The brushwork is restrained and precise, so the figures read clearly even at a small scale.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scroll's subject is the Confucian pair of loyalty and filial piety. Its figures are moral paragons whose righteous deeds were held up as models in Ming society, where such stories taught duty to family, faithfulness to the state, and virtuous conduct to scholars and officials. Wang Shanggong, a Ming master, rendered those abstract principles as recognisable historical scenes. The work is a representative piece of late Ming literati painting, a tradition that prized historical precedent and mastery of ink, and it is preserved in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork's figures and tree line become the edge of the object itself rather than sitting inside a rectangle. The scene is best seen up close, where the fine ink lines and the figure peeking from behind the tree reveal themselves, which suits a sticker meant to be looked at closely on the surface it is applied to.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/wang-shanggong-paragons-of-loyalty-and-filial-piety-1593-v9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788147029
https://thestickerspace.com/products/wang-shanggong-paragons-of-loyalty-and-filial-piety-1593-v9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
