Below it, a dense pine forest covers the mountainside in dark olive grey, and a waterfall falls past a pavilion set into the slopes. Village buildings cluster at the base, giving the eye a path from the high rock down to human scale. Pale paper stays open around the forms, and pale blue-grey washes give the distance its air, while a touch of vermilion red breaks through the muted palette as the single warm accent.

Meaning & Symbolism

Wang Jian was one of the Four Wangs of the early Qing dynasty, and his work helped formalise the Orthodox school of painting. This album follows the landscape traditions of the Yuan and Song masters, studying each style in turn. To paint in the manner of old masters was a deliberate act for literati of the seventeenth century: it tied the painter to China's cultural heritage and affirmed classical tradition during a period of political upheaval. The 1668 date places the album among the mature works that shaped elite taste for generations.

On the Kiss-Cut Stickers

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the mountain, the pines and the falling water keep their silhouette rather than sitting inside a rectangle. The design's vertical structure suits a shape that follows the peak and the village at its foot. Collectors of Chinese painting will recognise the album leaf in the cut itself, and the detail rewards close looking at arm's length.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/wang-jian-landscapes-in-the-styles-of-old-masters-dated-1668-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788218887
https://thestickerspace.com/products/wang-jian-landscapes-in-the-styles-of-old-masters-dated-1668-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
