Warm paper cream forms the ground, with pale grey and muted blue-grey mountains receding into the distance and pale sage green softening the rocky riverbank. A single small boat drifts on the water, and pine trees cling to a cliff edge, their dark ink strokes the strongest notes in the picture. Near a ledge sits a small pavilion, a secluded dwelling that anchors the scene. Two vermilion red artist seals sit in the margins, the only saturated colour on the page and a signature of the painter's hand.

Meaning & Symbolism

Wang Jian (1598–1677) was a prominent early Qing painter and a member of the Four Wangs, a group whose work dominated the orthodox school. This series of eighteen leaves studies mountains, rivers and hermitages through the conventions of spatial arrangement and structure that define scholarly landscape. The small pavilion and the solitary boat embody the ideal of the scholar-official withdrawn into nature, while the act of working in the styles of ancient masters is itself the subject: a dialogue with predecessors, and a vow to continue their brush techniques and compositional lineage. The seventeenth-century series stands as a bridge between the ideals of the past and the standards of his own time.

Made for the Flat, Close Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the leaf keeps its shape: the boat, the pines and the pavilion sit exactly where the painter placed them, with the paper border removed. Viewed up close, the fine ink strokes and the vermilion seals read as they would on a handscroll held in the hand, making this a piece for laptops, journals and notebooks where the artwork is meant to be looked at up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/wang-jian-landscapes-in-the-styles-of-ancient-masters-17th-century-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788219317
https://thestickerspace.com/products/wang-jian-landscapes-in-the-styles-of-ancient-masters-17th-century-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
