The brushwork dominates the frame, with its rhythm of dense characters and open paper between columns. Vermilion red seal stamps punctuate the text and provide the only strong colour, so the eye moves from the ink to the seals and back. Two visible inscriptions anchor the composition: 拜觀 and 睢陽五老圖次 歐陽文忠公韻, the first a formal salutation of viewing and the second a title line naming the Five Old Men painting and the rhyme of the Ouyang Xiu poem it answers.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Five Old Men gathered at Suiyang during the Northern Song dynasty, five retired high-ranking officials who turned from public office to poetry, conversation, and leisure. They stand for the Confucian ideal of the retired scholar-official, the move from service to private cultivation. The colophons record the names of these men and the praise of later poets and collectors, so the album became a document of social standing and literati identity. Each added inscription is a link in a chain of provenance that spans centuries of traditional Chinese art.

Where This Sticker Lives

A kiss-cut follows the outline of the artwork itself, so the rectangle of calligraphy and its red seals sits on the surface as a single clean shape. Its scale suits a close, held-in-view reading, where the columns of characters and the vermilion stamps can be read line by line. Placed on a notebook, a laptop lid, or the cover of a collector's box, it turns a page of literati record into an object that carries its own provenance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/various-scholars-frontispiece-and-colophons-to-the-album-five-old-men-of-suiyang-unknown-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788139336
https://thestickerspace.com/products/various-scholars-frontispiece-and-colophons-to-the-album-five-old-men-of-suiyang-unknown-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
