Ink-black running-script characters fill the field, with vermilion red accents breaking the text. Vertical columns structure the composition, and the inscriptions carry the visual weight. One visible line, 童顏鶴髮儼神仙盛, describes the gathered elders as rosy-faced, white-haired immortals. A dated line, 天啟五年乙丑仲夏日, records the fifth year of the Tianqi reign, corresponding to 1625, and a third line, 江寧顧起元觀此圖謹題一詩以致景仰之意, is a signed colophon by Gu Qiyuan of Jiangning.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Five Old Men of Suiyang are elderly scholar-officials said to have gathered in eleventh-century China, and the album celebrates longevity, wisdom, and the preservation of culture through political change. In literati tradition, retired officials stood for virtuous governance and withdrawal from corruption, so the gathering carries that ideal. The colophons add a second layer: each inscription acts as a witness that validates the core painting and places it in a chain of scholarly appreciation across generations. The varied hands show brushwork itself as an expression of cultural value.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the mounted sheet and mat become the shape of the object. The rectangular framing and dense columns of script translate into a single, unbroken leaf, with the cut line following the page edge. Placed where it can be read up close, the design rewards the same attention a collector gives the original album leaves.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/various-scholars-frontispiece-and-colophons-to-the-album-five-old-men-of-suiyang-unknown-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788139294
https://thestickerspace.com/products/various-scholars-frontispiece-and-colophons-to-the-album-five-old-men-of-suiyang-unknown-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
