The text is the subject, not a painting, and it forms the scholarly frame around the album's pictorial narrative.

Visual Elements & Composition

The design is built from rectangular panels: tan paper set against a white mat, with columns of ink-black running-script characters filling each leaf. The writing dominates the surface, and a touch of vermilion red appears among the ink. Lines run vertically, so the eye moves down each column in turn.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inscriptions name the gathering directly: 睢陽五老, the five retired officials who assembled at Suiyang in the eleventh century. Their meeting came to stand for honourable retirement, intellectual fellowship and literati influence on governance within the Chinese imperial tradition. The colophon is dated to the sixth day of early autumn in the Tianqi jiazi year of the Ming, 1624, at Jinling, and is signed by the later scholar Zhu Zhifan, who wrote and calligraphed it. The leaves also record the album's passage through successive collectors, so they document provenance as much as they honour the original assembly.

Made for the Cut Edge

Calligraphy like this is framed by its page edge, and a kiss-cut sticker follows that same logic. The cut traces the outline of the rectangular panel, so the leaf's own shape carries onto whatever surface it joins. Place it on a notebook cover or a laptop lid, where the lettering can be read up close, as a scholar would read a colophon.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/various-scholars-frontispiece-and-colophons-to-the-album-five-old-men-of-suiyang-unknown-v10-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788139260
https://thestickerspace.com/products/various-scholars-frontispiece-and-colophons-to-the-album-five-old-men-of-suiyang-unknown-v10-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
