Blooms in blush pink, pale white and pale yellow break the sage green into clusters of soft, layered colour. Along one edge runs a vertical column of kana verse, with a red seal placed as a single point of strong colour against the otherwise muted palette.

Meaning & Symbolism

Chrysanthemums carry a long association with autumn and longevity in East Asian art, and their repetition here reads as a meditation on the turning season. The kana verse pairs with the flowers the way leaves in these albums typically did, joining image and poem into one reflection on nature and human experience. The work comes from the Edo period, a time of sustained artistic output and refinement in Japan. It is one leaf in a compilation by various hands, a collective album that now sits within international museum collections and documents the artistic networks of the nineteenth century.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the chrysanthemum plant and the verse column keep their exact shape rather than sitting inside a square border. The leaf's panel edge becomes the sticker's edge, which lets the composition stand on its own against whatever surface it is placed on. Viewed up close, the fine ink lines and the small red seal show the detail that the album leaf was made to reward.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/various-artists-painting-album-of-sublime-talent-ca-1815-v12-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788139073
https://thestickerspace.com/products/various-artists-painting-album-of-sublime-talent-ca-1815-v12-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
