Yoshitora utilizes a bold color palette, contrasting the dark, somber tones of the man’s frock coat and top hat with the vibrant, layered textiles of the woman’s gown and floral-patterned shawl. The figures are rendered with the distinct flat-perspective style of ukiyo-e, yet the artist introduces Western-influenced shading and anatomical proportions to distinguish these subjects from traditional Japanese figures. Decorative motifs, including the intricate floral patterns on the woman’s attire and the precise lines of the man’s facial hair, serve to frame the subjects as symbols of a changing, modernizing world.

Meaning & Symbolism

This print belongs to the genre of yokohama-e, images produced during the Bakumatsu period when Japan reopened its ports to international trade. The figures serve as anthropological artifacts for the Japanese public, who viewed these "English barbarians" with both curiosity and artistic scrutiny. By depicting the couple with meticulous attention to their foreign sartorial choices, Yoshitora documents the collision of cultures during a volatile era. The print functions as a visual record of Japan’s first encounters with the West, turning the exoticism of the English travelers into a stylized cultural narrative.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut follows the precise contours of the figures, allowing the silhouette of the Victorian couple to stand out against your chosen surface. Because the design is isolated from the original print’s borders, the subjects become a floating historical cameo, ready to be placed on journals, laptops, or flat indoor surfaces where the detail of Yoshitora’s line work remains the primary focus.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-yoshitora-english-couple-igirisujin-12th-month-1860-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWYSH-2X2-161-front.webp?v=1789313649
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-yoshitora-english-couple-igirisujin-12th-month-1860-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
