The cello gives the scene its central line of movement. The palette is restrained, with tan paper, black linework, crimson, sage green and grey layered across the sheet. A rectangular title cartouche carries the Japanese text 佛蘭西國, which reads Furansukoku, "France."

Meaning & Symbolism

The print is a record of how Japan regarded the Western world in the 1860s. Its subjects, a European gentleman and a musician with an instrument foreign to Japanese tradition, show a curiosity about distant cultures that was growing at the close of the Edo period. Utagawa Yoshikazu worked within the woodblock tradition, so the image carries both the expressive linework of that craft and an observational interest in international geography and daily life abroad.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the figures, cartouche and text of this print stand alone on the surface they are placed on. Its flat, clean edges suit smooth surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the sheet's vertical composition and crimson accents read clearly at close range.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-yoshikazu-furansukoku-france-1861-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWYSH-2X2-114-alt-3.webp?v=1785627228
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-yoshikazu-furansukoku-france-1861-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
