A man in a red coat plays the cello indoors, while a small boy in a red jacket points up at a balloon with a basket and two flags. A glass bell-jar apparatus with rows of small tubes sits on a table nearby. A round golden-yellow panel holds bamboo branches, and the palette of sea teal, vermilion, grass green and cream keeps the scene bright and even. The characters 亜米利加 (America) appear in the scene, anchoring the Western subjects in the picture itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print belongs to the late Edo period, when Japanese artists turned their attention to Western technology and music. The balloon stands for foreign invention and the cello for European musical culture, while the bamboo keeps the image rooted in Japanese decorative tradition. The inscription 萬國張交合 pairs with these subjects to frame the scene as a meeting of nations. Together they capture cultural exchange at a moment of significant global change.

Made for the Sticker Surface

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, so the balloon, the cellist and the bamboo keep their exact shapes once they leave the sheet. The image works on a flat surface where its panels and figures can be read at close range, and it is well suited to indoor decor, where the piece can be placed in a collection of journals, laptops or other personal objects.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-yoshiiku-american-balloon-american-playing-cello-bamboo-10th-month-1861-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWYSH-2X2-18-alt-3.webp?v=1785628567
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-yoshiiku-american-balloon-american-playing-cello-bamboo-10th-month-1861-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
