Slate blue and charcoal fill the dark ground, while vermilion red, cream and gold yellow pick out the figures and the lightning. A standing man in a floral patterned kimono holds a small mallet, and a ring of drums curves around the thunder deity Raijin. Beside him stands a red-skinned demon in a tiger-skin loincloth, and a carved wooden stool sits on the dark platform. Inscriptions in the print read 大坂, 早竹虎吉 and 神鳴り.

Meaning & Symbolism

The contrast at the heart of the work is nature's fragility set against the overwhelming force of the elements. The plum blossom is delicate and brief, and the lightning is sudden and violent, so the pairing turns a fleeting moment of beauty into a display of power. Produced in the late Edo period, the print draws on the theatrical world of its time, with Raijin and the drum ring marking the scene as thunder itself.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the blossom, the lightning and the figures keep their shape on the surface they are applied to. The design suits smooth flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where its strong colour blocks and pale blossom read clearly at a glance.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-yoshiharu-the-plum-blossom-that-flew-on-lightning-from-chikushino-1857-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWYSH-2X2-16-alt-3.webp?v=1785628595
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-yoshiharu-the-plum-blossom-that-flew-on-lightning-from-chikushino-1857-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
