Three women walk along the shore, one shading herself with a parasol, while two boys carry poles and bundles past them. Small dogs move through the scene, and moored sailing boats rest on the bay behind. The palette is built from pale ochre, pale grey-green, vermilion red, olive green and charcoal, with the horizontal bands of land and water giving the print its striped rhythm.

Meaning & Symbolism

Takanawa was a seaside stretch of the Tokaido road near Edo, where travellers and townspeople came to walk by the water. Toyokuni I, a leading artist of the Utagawa school, drew on this everyday leisure to record fashion, work and daily life of the late eighteenth century. The parasol, the carried loads and the boats on the bay mark the scene as ordinary coastal life, while the calm pacing of the figures reflects the serene, observational mood that defined Edo-period prints.

Gracing a Sticker's Outline

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork is seen as a single shape rather than a framed rectangle. The parasol, the boats and the figures each define an edge that the cut can follow, turning a portrait panel into an object with its own silhouette. It suits smooth flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the print can be placed and read at close range.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-toyokuni-i-women-at-takanawa-beach-ca-1790s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWTYK-2X2-112-alt-3.webp?v=1785629147
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-toyokuni-i-women-at-takanawa-beach-ca-1790s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
