A woman in a dark striped kimono, wrapped in a dusty pink patterned outer robe, stands as the dominant form. Beside her, a young girl in a blue-and-white patterned top holds a paper lantern banded with a geometric pattern. The palette is restrained: pale ochre, charcoal, dusty pink, sage green, and a single note of vermilion red. A calligraphy poem sits in the upper left, and a red seal stamp anchors the image, giving the scroll its authenticating mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

The painting belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition, where pairings of women and attendants offered viewers a glimpse of fashion, domestic routine, and refined taste in the urban life of the period. The lantern and the poem point toward the leisurely, cultured world associated with the floating world and elite households. Toyokuni I was a master of the school, best known for his kabuki actor prints and beauty portraits. This ink-and-colour painting on silk shows the same sensibility working in a painted, rather than printed, format.

Cut to the Figure

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the figures of the woman and the girl can be read as a single silhouette rather than a rectangle. Once peeled from its backing, the piece can be set on a smooth, flat surface such as a journal or laptop lid, where the scroll's vertical rhythm and the lantern's glow stay in view at close range.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-toyokuni-i-woman-and-attendant-ca-1795-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788138493
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-toyokuni-i-woman-and-attendant-ca-1795-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
