A woman in a vermilion-red hood is draped over her shoulders, and that red dominates the image against a dark brown-black ground and pale ochre tones. Black ink carries the linework, and a Japanese cursive calligraphy poem runs alongside the figure, closed by a red seal stamp.

Meaning & Symbolism

The figure borrows the posture and attributes of Daruma, a symbol of meditation and unwavering perseverance. Placing a courtesan in that role is a mitate-e move, the Edo-period parody form that recasts a familiar image in a new setting. The joke sets the discipline of a high-ranking woman in the floating world beside the discipline of a monk, and it mocks the rigid hierarchies of the age. Toyoharu, a key figure in the shift of ukiyo-e toward perspective and narrative depth, made the piece to fuse popular urban culture with classical art.

Why It Suits the Sticker

Daruma is a figure defined by his outline, round and weighted, and this kiss-cut sticker follows the contour of the composition itself, so the red hood and the seated silhouette read as one shape on the surface. Its small scale rewards a close look, like the collector's view of a print, and the calligraphy and seal stamp stay sharp enough to read at arm's length.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-toyoharu-courtesan-as-daruma-ca-1800-inscription-ca-1810-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1788224826
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-toyoharu-courtesan-as-daruma-ca-1800-inscription-ca-1810-v2-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
