A single traveller in a crimson cloak and hat walks the path, the only warm note in the panel, so the eye settles on the figure first. Behind him, a snow-covered village clings to a cliff, a bare winter tree stands on the slope, and snow falls over the sea. The figure is small against the landscape, which makes the emptiness around him the subject as much as the monk.

Meaning & Symbolism

Nichiren was sent to Sado Island in 1271, and Kuniyoshi returns to that moment as a study of endurance. The red cloak marks the solitary traveller against a landscape of cold and isolation, and the bare tree and falling snow carry the sense of hardship without spelling it out. Kuniyoshi made his name in character study and historical narrative, and this print, made in the Edo period, shows that skill applied to a Buddhist figure whose exile became central to his legacy.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the monk, the path and the village can be followed edge to edge rather than framed as a rectangle. The traveller's red cloak works as a focal point on any smooth flat surface, such as a laptop, journal or window, where the snowscape can be read at close range as the owner handles the object.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kuniyoshi-monk-nichiren-in-exile-on-sado-island-from-the-series-illustration-of-famous-monks-183536-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNY-2X2-246-alt-3.webp?v=1785632904
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kuniyoshi-monk-nichiren-in-exile-on-sado-island-from-the-series-illustration-of-famous-monks-183536-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
