This is Utagawa Kuniyoshi's woodblock print of Nichiren's rain prayer at Ryōzengasaki.

Visual Elements & Composition

The print is built as a horizontal panel, with the monk's red umbrella forming the strongest shape in the frame. Its vermilion dome stands out against the grey rain and the cream sky, drawing the eye straight to the figure. Below, kneeling followers sit on brown rock, sailing boats cross the ocean blue, and distant mountains close off the horizon. The printed title in the upper margin reads 高祖御一代略圖, "Concise Illustrated Biography of the Founder's Life," and 文永八鎌倉靈山ヶ崎雨祈, "Bunei 8, Kamakura, Ryōzengasaki Rain Prayer," which anchors the scene in its dated episode.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene records a moment from Nichiren's life, when his prayer at Ryōzengasaki in Kamakura was answered with rain. The umbrella and the falling water make the answered prayer visible, linking devotion directly to the natural world. Kuniyoshi produced the series between 1835 and 1836, during the late Edo period, and it presents Nichiren's life as a visual biography in the manner of Ukiyo-e narrative prints. The work brings together Buddhist devotion, Japanese religious history, and the bond between spiritual practice and nature.

Designed for the Cut Edge

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the umbrella dome and the monk's silhouette become the edge of the object itself. The image reads as a single figure rather than a framed scene, which suits a print built around one devoted man in the rain. For collectors of Edo-period prints and anyone drawn to Nichiren's story, the sticker carries the composition in a compact form.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kuniyoshi-concise-illustrated-biography-of-monk-nichiren-prayer-for-rain-answered-at-ryzengasaki-183536-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNY-2X2-224-alt-3.webp?v=1785633223
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kuniyoshi-concise-illustrated-biography-of-monk-nichiren-prayer-for-rain-answered-at-ryzengasaki-183536-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
