Deep black linework defines every contour, while pale cream, emerald green, vermilion red and ochre gold carry the colour. A seated courtesan with elaborate golden hairpins draws the eye first. Beside her, a child in a green patterned kimono reads a card, and a crowd of spectators gathers behind a latticed window. A red clock tower with its bell rises among them, the detail that anchors the scene to its hour.

Meaning & Symbolism

In traditional Japanese timekeeping, the Hour of the Goat falls in the early afternoon, and Kunisada's series assigns a pleasure of spring to each of the twelve hours of the day. The clock tower names the hour directly, while the zodiac animal ties the scene to the cyclical calendar. Kunisada (1786–1865) was the most prolific Ukiyo-e master of his time, and this print shows the storytelling and refined elegance of the late Edo period, when woodblock prints brought urban pleasures and seasonal life to a wide audience.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the artwork's rectangular frame and its clock tower can stand on their own without a border around them. The vignette and the figures read as a single composed image on a flat surface, such as a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window pane, where the print's linework stays crisp at close range. Collectors of Ukiyo-e and of the zodiac will recognise the hour at a glance, and the design rewards a second look at the crowd and the hairpins.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kunisada-twelve-hours-of-spring-pleasures-hour-of-the-goat-19th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNS-2X2-362-alt-3.webp?v=1785637087
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kunisada-twelve-hours-of-spring-pleasures-hour-of-the-goat-19th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
