Vermilion red provides the sharpest accent. The figure sits inside an oval vignette, while round tie-dye-style medallions repeat across the field and give the print its rhythm. A rectangular label carries the characters 豊国画, the Toyokuni-ga inscription that marks the print as a work of this artist's studio. The flowering branch, with its plum-like blossoms, breaks the geometry of the medallions and leads the eye back to the figure.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kunisada, one of the most prolific woodblock designers of the nineteenth century, created the Six Jewel Faces (Mu tama-gao) series in the mid- to late 1830s. Its title points to the portrait tradition, where a face and its gesture carry the meaning of the print. The yamabuki, known in English as the mountain rose, is a flower of spring and of the Japanese garden, and here it is the thing being held and shown. The design joins character portraiture with close, naturalistic attention to plant form, two strands that defined Edo-period printmaking.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the oval vignette, the medallions, and the branch become the shape of the object itself. Nothing is left as background to frame the image. The design reads as a single cut-out figure in blue and vermilion, which suits a sticker that sits on a surface as an image in its own right. The branch carries the composition outward, and the cut lets it reach the edge of the sticker unbroken.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kunisada-mitsuuji-with-mountain-roses-yamabuki-from-the-series-six-jewel-faces-mu-tama-gao-mid-to-late-1830s-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNS-2X2-324-alt-3.webp?v=1785637653
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kunisada-mitsuuji-with-mountain-roses-yamabuki-from-the-series-six-jewel-faces-mu-tama-gao-mid-to-late-1830s-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
