A framed square inset holds the portrait of Danjūrō I, a smaller image that pulls the eye away from the living actor and back toward the past. Within the composition, a figure in a diamond-patterned kimono holds a staff and two swords, while the palette of pale blue-grey, vermilion red, ochre yellow and black gives the scene its traditional Japanese colour. A handwritten poem column and a signature seal sit alongside the figures, and the visible inscriptions read 初代 (first generation) and 五渡亭国貞画, the artist's signature.

Meaning & Symbolism

The inset portrait is the heart of the design. Placing a successor before the image of an ancestor makes the print a statement about lineage, the idea that a Kabuki name carries the authority of those who held it before. The inscription 初代 marks Danjūrō I as the founding generation of the Ichikawa line, and the Ichikawa family's stage tradition is what the print honours. Produced in the Edo period, the work belongs to the early nineteenth-century tradition of actor portraiture, where prints were both record and celebration of theatrical prestige, and Kunisada was among its most accomplished practitioners.

Built for the Cut Edge

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so this print keeps its framed inset and figures as the boundary of the object itself. The inset portrait reads as a self-contained image within the larger scene, which suits a sticker that carries its own frame. Placed on a surface, the sticker presents the layered composition of actor, ancestor and poem as one deliberate piece, a small homage to a family line that still defines the Kabuki stage.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kunisada-ichikawa-danjr-vii-admiring-ichikawa-danjr-i-in-an-inset-portrait-1819-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNS-2X2-206-alt-3.webp?v=1785639315
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kunisada-ichikawa-danjr-vii-admiring-ichikawa-danjr-i-in-an-inset-portrait-1819-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
