Teal and dusky purple set the ground of the scene, while orange and black carry the figures and the red parasol that draws the eye. Two women in kimono walk with a shoulder pole, and beside them people gather across a tidal flat toward a rocky shoreline. A red roundel cartouche anchors the upper field and holds the inscriptions 香蝶楼 and 国貞, the second being Kunisada's own name. Brown-gold accents in the rocks and figures give the palette its warmth.

Meaning & Symbolism

The series title, Ukiyo nenjū gyōji, translates as Annual Events in the Floating World, and each print records one month's observances. For Yayoi, the third lunar month, the scene centres on the outdoor pleasures and rituals of spring: the walk, the open shore, and the communal gathering at low tide. The parasol and the carried pole mark the procession of daily life, while the tidal flat ties the season to the rhythm of the coast. Kunisada, one of the most prolific masters of the Utagawa school, rendered these customs as a record of how Edo society marked the calendar.

Why It Suits a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the composition is contained within the shape it leaves behind on the page. The cartouche and the vertical panel read as a complete image at a glance, and the flat, graphic colour blocks of the print translate cleanly to a single adhesive piece. Placed on a laptop, a journal, or a window, the sticker carries the calendar's spring scene into everyday surfaces, where it can be seen up close, the way the original prints were meant to be handled.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kunisada-annual-event-the-third-month-ukiyo-nenj-gyji-yayoi-mid-19th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNS-2X2-174-alt-3.webp?v=1785639785
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kunisada-annual-event-the-third-month-ukiyo-nenj-gyji-yayoi-mid-19th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
