The performer dominates the frame with long flowing hair and a peony headpiece, and his blue kimono is patterned with a repeating white star motif that carries the eye across the figure. A circular portrait medallion, showing a woman with red hair, sits within the composition, set against a vertical rectangular panel. Printed characters are part of the layout, including 四季 (the four seasons) and the actor names 市川海老藏 and 澤村.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print belongs to ukiyo-e, the genre that recorded the beauty and drama of contemporary Edo-period life. Kabuki actors were its central subjects, and their exaggerated poses, costumes and makeup made the stage a form of popular visual culture. The star-spot pattern on the kimono and the peony headpiece signal the theatrical costume as a crafted object in its own right, while the actor names and the seasonal text tie the image to the publishing traditions of the period. The album format placed these portraits in circulation among collectors, which is part of their history as much as their subject.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its artwork, so the performer's silhouette, the medallion and the rectangular panel meet the surface as they were drawn. The composition works at close range, where the linework and the seasonal characters can be read, and it rewards looking at it up close the way a woodblock print is meant to be viewed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kunisada-album-of-thirty-actor-prints-19th-century-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNS-2X2-122-alt-3.webp?v=1785640518
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kunisada-album-of-thirty-actor-prints-19th-century-v13-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
