Indigo blue, vermilion red, ochre yellow and black dominate against the cream paper, the traditional palette of hand-printed woodblock work. Cherry blossom branches sit within the frame, and a samurai with a sword appears among the figures. The name 中村芝翫 is printed on the sheet, anchoring the portrait to a specific performer.

Meaning & Symbolism

Yakusha-e, the actor portrait, was one of the most popular forms of Edo-period print culture. Kunisada made these images for theatre audiences who collected them as souvenirs and as records of favourite performers. The exaggerated poses and costume patterns translate Kabuki's heightened drama into a still image, while the blossoms and armoured figures point to the period's stage repertoire and its love of historical heroes. The work belongs to the Edo period's flourishing of popular performing arts.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the actor's silhouette, with its sweeping sleeves and raised arm, becomes the shape of the object itself rather than a rectangle with a picture inside. Collectors of Japanese print culture will recognise the composition at a glance, and the cut edge keeps the stage presence intact. Each piece reads as a single performer lifted from the album and set down where it can be seen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kunisada-album-of-forty-eight-actor-prints-19th-century-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNS-2X2-94-alt-3.webp?v=1785640908
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kunisada-album-of-forty-eight-actor-prints-19th-century-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
