A woman in a kimono stands beside bamboo, holding a book, while two children play with the kite and a small white dog moves through the street. The palette is built from cream, rust brown, sage green, vermilion and charcoal, and the checkered ground pattern anchors the figures. Signature text reads 竹齢舎 and 歌川国直, the publisher's mark and the artist's name.

Meaning & Symbolism

Bamboo signals longevity and resilience, and it is a standard New Year motif, paired here with the kite, a seasonal game that marks the holiday on the street. The woman with her book and the children at play show two sides of the same festive day: quiet study and open celebration. Kuninao was active in the early nineteenth century, and this print records the everyday rhythms of Edo urban life with the precision of a working woodblock artist.

Built to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the shape of its artwork, so the kite, the panel and the figures define the object's silhouette rather than a rectangle. Placed on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window, it reads as a small piece of the street scene set into the surface it sits on. Indoors, it works as a compact view of Edo New Year, kept close enough to study the details of the kimono, the bamboo and the dog.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-kuninao-street-scene-in-the-new-year-season-1814-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWKNN-2X2-10-alt-3.webp?v=1785642238
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-kuninao-street-scene-in-the-new-year-season-1814-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
