Moored sailing boats sit on the blue bay, and a rowing boat with its boatman drifts in the foreground. Along the road, shopfronts with hanging signs and dark roof-brown eaves line the coast, while pedestrians carry umbrellas across the street. A vertical text cartouche carries the characters 東海道, 五十三次之内, 神奈川 and 広重画, naming the Tōkaidō series, the station and the artist.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kanagawa was one of the fifty-three stations on the Tōkaidō, the road linking Edo with Kyoto, so the scene stands for the journey itself. The teahouses offer rest to weary travellers, and the maids from local inns approaching visitors show the commerce that kept the road alive. Hiroshige made this print around 1833–34, in the Edo period, when landscape and everyday travel were central subjects of Ukiyo-e. The pairing of calm water and sunset light turns a busy waystation into a moment of quiet.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own image, so the bay, boats and sky appear as a single shape once applied. The sunset palette and the vertical cartouche suit a object viewed up close, where the print's fine linework and its written station name can be read at arm's length.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-view-of-the-kanagawa-station-at-sunset-ca-183334-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-10508875790162535876-alt-3.webp?v=1785647777
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-view-of-the-kanagawa-station-at-sunset-ca-183334-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
