Diagonal stacks of logs run along the canal and set the rhythm of the scene, while the figures poling their boats move through the water below them. Snow-laden pines and two birds crossing a snowy sky open the upper half, giving the wood-heavy lower half room to breathe. Earthy browns, deep indigo and neutral greys dominate, with teal, salmon pink and cream picking out the accents. A red vertical cartouche carries the title characters 名所江戸百景 and 深川木場, and a pig with a small figure appears at the lower left.

Meaning & Symbolism

The series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo documented the city's neighbourhoods, markets and waterways, and this sheet belongs to that record. Fukagawa's timber yards supplied the wood for a city rebuilt again and again after fires, so the stacked logs stand for the commerce and construction that kept Edo running. The birds and snow add a counterpoint of stillness, the observational calm that defines Hiroshige's late landscapes.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is a flat object that lives on a surface in plain view, so the viewer meets the print at close range and in full. The tall format of the composition suits a single cut-out image placed on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window pane, where the canal scene can be read one stack and one bird at a time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-the-lumber-yard-at-fukagawa-1856-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-900-alt-3.webp?v=1785649410
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-the-lumber-yard-at-fukagawa-1856-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
