Snow-covered peaks rise across the distance, and tall vertical rock formations frame the foreground. Pine trees, heavy with snow, cling to the rocks, and a small wooden bridge crosses a gorge. The palette is restrained: pale cream and grey-blue dominate, with teal and slate in the shadowed rock and a single vermilion accent that draws the eye. Printed title characters, 木曽路之山川, sit within the scene and name the Kiso road and its mountains.

Meaning & Symbolism

The work belongs to Setsugekka, or Snow, Moon, and Flowers, a set of triptychs in which Hiroshige treats the three subjects as seasonal moods. This panel represents setsu, snow, the winter theme of the set. The Kiso region lay along the Nakasendo, the mountain route between Edo and Kyoto, so its peaks were familiar to travellers and to the print-buying public of the Edo period. Hiroshige's landscapes are known for capturing atmosphere over detail, and here the snow itself becomes the subject: it softens edges, quiets the scene, and holds the valley in one long winter moment.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the composition becomes a shape you place rather than a rectangle you frame. The cut edge traces the rock and peak silhouettes, and the pale ground of the print reads as snow against whatever surface it meets. Because the artwork is a single panel of a larger triptych, it works as a fragment: one winter valley, lifted from the set and carried on its own.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-the-kiso-mountains-in-snow-dated-8th-month-of-the-snake-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-896-alt-3.webp?v=1785649466
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-the-kiso-mountains-in-snow-dated-8th-month-of-the-snake-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
