Deep blue water runs through the lower half, its indigo tones set against the cream of the paper. A grey hill rises in the distance, and snow-laden pine branches reach in from the edge of the frame. A tall vertical panel and a diagonal plank path lead the eye across the picture, while wooden stakes stand in the water. A single traveller in a conical hat and straw rain cape walks the path, small against the wide landscape. The print carries no text beyond its title and series information.

Meaning & Symbolism

The lone figure and the falling quiet of snow are central to the work's mood, which is serene and tranquil. Hiroshige belonged to the Edo period, when ukiyo-e woodblock prints brought views of the city and its landscapes to a wide audience. The series pairs famous places of Edo with the seasons, and this sheet marks winter as a season of stillness and transition. The river, the snow and the traveller together express the calm beauty of the historical Japanese landscape.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because a kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, the traveller, the pine branches and the curve of the river can sit on a surface as one shape, with the paper of the scene reading as a single silhouette of winter. The print's small figure and layered snow suit a surface seen up close, where the viewer's eye moves from the path to the hill to the sky, just as it would across a hand-held woodblock sheet.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-sumida-river-in-the-snow-from-the-series-famous-places-in-edo-in-the-four-seasons-1834-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-804-alt-3.webp?v=1785650871
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-sumida-river-in-the-snow-from-the-series-famous-places-in-edo-in-the-four-seasons-1834-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
