Travelers in straw rain capes and hats hurry along the road, while rooftops and a bamboo grove sit in the background. The palette is restrained, dominated by deep indigo, grey, and teal, with dark olive, muted green, and straw yellow picking out the earth tones. The printed Japanese characters 東海道, 五拾三次之内, 庄野, and 廣重画 name the road, the series, the station, and the artist.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print comes from The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, the series that made Hiroshige famous, which follows the road linking Edo and Kyoto through its post towns. Shōno was one of those stations, and the sudden rain was a familiar hazard of the journey. The scene carries the Edo-period themes of travel, the natural world, and the ephemeral quality of weather, where a storm passes as quickly as it arrives.

Shaped to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the contour of its artwork, so the rain-swept panel becomes its own shape on whatever surface it joins. The diagonal rain reads as motion across the cut edge, and the travelers stay legible at close range, where a viewer picks out each cape and hat. Placed on a laptop, journal, or window, the print turns a flat surface into a small stretch of Tōkaidō road.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-sudden-shower-at-shno-from-the-series-fifty-three-stations-of-the-tkaid-183435-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-796-alt-3.webp?v=1785650981
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-sudden-shower-at-shno-from-the-series-fifty-three-stations-of-the-tkaid-183435-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
