Midnight teal and charcoal grey carry the darkness, while warm peach and dark olive in the lower field and the vermilion accents draw the eye back up toward the glowing points of light. The fox-fires are the brightest passages, scattered through the branches and set against the cool ground. Beneath the tree, foxes gather in the gloom, and a distant lantern-lit procession moves across the fields, with haystacks sitting quietly in the lower plane. The print carries its inscriptions directly: 名所江戸百景 (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), 王子装束, 衣の木, 大晦日, 狐火 and the artist's signature 広重画.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene depicts kitsunebi, the fox-fires that Japanese folklore associated with the gathering of foxes on the last night of the year. The Tree at Oji was a known landmark in the Oji district of Edo, and the print places that real place inside a folk tradition of seasonal wonder. Hiroshige, the master of ukiyo-e landscape, made the night itself the subject: the tree, the fields and the procession sit inside a quiet sense of mystery that marks the artist's atmospheric views. The work is a reproduction of the 1857 woodblock print, and its themes, nature, folklore and the turning of the year, come through in every line.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of its own image, so the dark tree, the scattered fox-fires and the figures below are cut to their own outline rather than sitting inside a border. The composition reads at close range, the way a small print is held in the hand, and the glowing points of light stand out clearly against whatever surface they are placed on.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-shozokuenoki-tree-at-oji-foxfires-on-new-years-eve-1857-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-746-alt-3.webp?v=1785651682
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-shozokuenoki-tree-at-oji-foxfires-on-new-years-eve-1857-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
