Olive green and earth tones anchor the lower scene, while the figures are drawn with precise linework. A Greek key border frames the whole image, and a vertical red cartouche carries the characters 忠臣蔵 as the title mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

Chushingura, the story of the loyal retainers, is one of Japan's most celebrated theatrical narratives. It follows forty-seven samurai who avenge a lord wronged at court. The retainers here, moving through snow on a bridge and crossing water in a boat beneath a straw-hatted oarsman, embody the loyalty and resolve that drive the story. Hiroshige, a master of the Edo period, used the ukiyo-e print to carry theatre and history to a wide audience, and this work from around 1835 shows that tradition at its height.

Placing the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its artwork, so the bridge and the samurai become the sticker's own silhouette rather than a rectangle on a surface. It suits smooth flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the composition can be seen up close and the Greek key border reads as a frame. The red cartouche and the snowbound bridge make a strong focal point on a notebook cover or a laptop lid, placing a piece of Edo theatre in daily use.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/utagawa-hiroshige-scene-i-in-act-xi-of-chushingura-ca-1835-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-TGWHRS-2X2-676-alt-3.webp?v=1785652670
https://thestickerspace.com/products/utagawa-hiroshige-scene-i-in-act-xi-of-chushingura-ca-1835-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
